Our Smart Kid - Blogging About Our Smart Kid

We have decided to write a blog about our smart kid, and document and highlight things about him that are of interest or that come to mind.  It's not often as parents that we get to document everything that our children do, or tell our kids about them.  We're always being told as well that we have a smart child on our hands, so we decided to make this blog to document not only for us to remember down the line, but for our child to reflect back on and see his own progression, and why we, and many others call him a smart kid.  You're welcome to join us as we write about our son, and should another child come into our lives, as we add on another smart kid to the blog as well!  Enjoy!

The Best Formula For Babies - Is There One?

Formula for BabiesOkay, so everyone who has a baby always wants to know what the best formula for babies may be.  And of course, who wouldn't as a new parent.  After all, we don't want to cause issues within our children by feeding them the wrong thing.  But then, this is the joy of parenting, and as we learned, some things you just find out through trial and error.  So what do we feel is the best formula for babies?

Well, from what we learned, I know that I'll have to say the "best formula for babies" is hands down, breast milk.  Okay, so it's not formula, but it is definitely hands down for us, the option that worked best for Isaiah.  And as my wife mentioned on a previous blog post, I am very glad that she decided on breastfeeding our baby, and I definitely was very proud of her as I know that, no matter how much I wanted to help, I couldn't.  I mean, I could bottle feed him, but obviously, I couldn't do what she did in terms of producing milk and feeding him.  It was really a touching moment and I know it brought us all closer.  I would definitely say not to give up, and if you can, get a lactation specialist or some tips on breastfeeding that can help you.  It really will be great for your child, trust me.

It really was a major blessing and definitely helped Isaiah become strong, and resist a lot of little colds and infections that more babies tend to get when not being breastfed at all.  And with me having been prone to ear infections as a child, the fact that Isaiah didn't have any was a testimony on how great it is.  Not to mention, it seemed to play a part in Isaiah's brain development as we would research and read quite a bit before we had him, and how breastfeeding helps brain function.  So maybe that's the cause as to why Isaiah was eager to learn and knew his ABC's well before he even turned 2?  I couldn't really say that is without a doubt, the exact reason why.  But, I can say that even now, we still continue to get compliments on how smart Isaiah is.  So for us, yes, the best formula for babies is breast milk.

As far as pinpointing an actual formula, I can say that what worked best for us, is Good Start Soy Formula (as you can see above, though they changed the packaging a bit).  We had tried a regular formula from Similac I believe it was, but Isaiah didn't take too well to that after his time of breastfeeding had ended.  The Similac regular formula seemed to have broken him out in splotches on his neck and face.  We panicked a bit because it's almost as though the rash appeared suddenly, and we didn't want to chance him potentially having a serious issue to the formula.

So we took him to the doctor (you'll find yourself doing that quite a bit out of fear more than anything as a first parent).  The doctor basically told us that he had broken out in hives but was fine.  We mentioned the formula and he said that would more than likely be the reason, especially since it happened moments after we gave it to him.  He recommended trying a Soy based one, so we picked up a can of Good Start Soy Formula.  I can say to this day, it was the best formula for babies, well, for us anyway.  It didn't break him out or anything at all.  And after we saw that it didn't cause splotchy rashes on him, we were convinced!  He also had less gas and what appeared to be colic also went away once he was drinking the soy formula.

The best formula for babies will be what works best with your little boy or girl through trial and error.  You can try the others that are out there to see what your baby can work with.  But I definitely say that the best option would be breastfeeding your baby first, and if that's not an option, then bottle feeding some Gerber Good Start Soy Formula would be a great alternative.  And not to worry about building a lactose intolerance issue.  Isaiah LOVES milk now, and I mean regular 2% milk rather than Soymilk.  So for us, it was a great option and if I had to choose an actual formula, I would have to say this one would be the best formula for babies in my opinion.

Oh, inside tip (if you so choose):  We didn't actually buy our formula from places like Walgreens or Walmart.  I actually did the first can or two, but I looked on eBay and bought them from there via Bids... I saved nicely on the cost of it as I would often win 6 or 7 bulk can bids for what you'd pay for 3 or 4 cans at Walmart.  So that was a blessing as well!  Enjoy, and good luck on your search for what may be your best formula for babies.
